December 15, 2022: It was with great sadness to learn that Walt passed away today.
He was one of the nicest guys in the hobby. He had a multi-million dollar collection
and was a numismatic icon, but he was always down to earth. A true gentleman that
will be deeply missed.
The Walter Husak collection was sold by Heritage Auction Galleries February 15, 2008.
The 301 large cents in his collection represented one of the most remarkable collections
of early date large cents ever assembled in terms of quality and completeness,
lacking only three Sheldon varieties, the S-15, S-79, and S-80.
The collection sold for over 10 million dollars.
I had the privilege of meeting Walt at EAC 2003 and again
at EAC 2008 in Dallas, soon after the conclusion of his auction. In short, he is
a true gentleman. I was fortunate enough to win one coin from the
auction, the 1797 S-124. Walt was kind enough to give me his personal envelope
of the coin, plus all past envelopes that he saved for the coin, in order to preserve
the pedigree. He was also kind enough to grant me permission to post these photographs
of his collection that he took himself, before the collection was slabbed and sent
to Heritage, in hopes that these photos could be shared by the collecting community.
The photos of Walt's coins are shown below, by variety. You can click on the coin
icons to see a large view of the coin. There is no photo available for a few of the
varieties; in this case there is a "hole" where the photo would be.
I want to personally thank Lance Newman, who took the time to convert the majority
of these images to viewable format.
